A. SUMMIT OBJECTIVE

Making Information Pay on the Internet: Setting an Agenda for Industry Collaboration is a unique, highly focused, interactive roundtable summit which represents the first phase of a $400,000 research effort being launched by the the Interdisciplinary Center for Electronic Enterprise (ICEE) at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. The IIPC is is a joint project of the ICEE, the UMass-Amherst computer-science department, the Isenberg School of Management and corporate sponsors.

The IIIPC summer is one track of a four-track UMass conference entitled: Electronic Commerce: Foundations for the Future running concurrently with the IIPC tracks.

B. THE PROBLEM

Publishers are confused by the array of unproved options for managing and selling information on the Internet. The summit is designed to clear some of that confusion. It will allow publishers, audience owners and technologists to share ideas on industry collaboration around infrastructure development -- while maintaining and broadening the competitive free market for the pricing and marketing of information.

The summit will:


• Provide an overview of current method and practice for "getting paid" for sale of intellectual property via the Internet;
• Review theoretical, proposed and under-development mechanisms for managing users, copyight and payments for Internet information sales, including text, audio, video, software and multimedia; and,
• And will permit IIPC convenors to obtain input on what content owners will require from a mature payments protocol which supports multiple pricing levels and copyright-control methods.

D. WHO SHOULD ATTEND

While registration is open and proceedings non-confidenial, it is expected that traditional and multi-media publishers, software publishers, entertainment providers, banks, telcos, major ISPs, Internet infrastructure developers and other payments-technology providers will be among registrants.

E. WHO WILL DIRECT PROCEEDINGS

While two "keynote" speakers are included in the PAYMENTS track and the general conference has other speakers, the IIPC summit is organized to promote a high-degree of interaction among panelists, presenters and conference registrants. Where possible, break-outs will be arranged "roundtable" style to foster sharing of experience and insights among attendees as well as among speakers and conference collaborators.

Presenters are expected to fit within one of three general categories (although these are not exclusive):

• Content owners who have first-hand experience with information sales on the Internet or across pre-cursor closed networks;
• Technology vendors who have tested, deployed or are developing or planning payment-enabling or copyright- enabling products or systems; and,
• Government, institutional, academic or enterprise researchers with significant knowledge of the history of network-oriented sale of digital information objects (as opposed to hard goods).

The summit and conference will be held at the BankBoston Conference Center in downtown Boston. Conference check-in runs from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 16, 1999, at the Suissotel in downtown Boston. Contact the conference administrators for any special travel or lodging arrangements.

A block of rooms at the Suissotel, One Avenue de Lafayette, Boston, has been set aside for conference attendees.
