A Note from Pat Fletcher:
At 3.3 miles in this section the hiker should take a left and follow
cherry St. Ex. to Mountain road and take a right. Trail between
Cherry St. Ex. and Southampton Rd. is closed. a land owner has posted
his land and until a relocation can be completed you should use
this road walk.

This section starts with a short relocation from the older guide book. It takes you to the east of the old route because of a landowners request and
logging. You rejoin the old route after crossing the old trolley line from Westfied to Holyoke. After Cherry St. Ex. you will find some downed trees, which were left at the requese of a land owner because of ATF trafic in the area. The blazing in this area is reported to be faint and in need of being redone.

Section 5 (Rt. 202 to Rt. 141)
Departed S. from Rt. 141 on old logging road. Road emerges at a clearing after about 0.75 miles, at intersection with gravel road with some construction activity and peppered with "No Trespassing" signs. Trail bears left here onto gravel road (past "No Trespassing" sign), but could find no blazes indicating this. First blaze on gravel road is down the hill and around the corner, about 400 yards from intersection. Had to drive to Rt. 202 and follow trail N. from there to determine proper route.
Blazes are faint both northbound and southbound N. of Cherry St. The northbound departure from Cherry St. is easy to miss, and easy to lose once you've found it. Trail appears to skirt edge of swamp W. of gun club, about 20 feet to the right and a bit below what appears to be the main trail. One or more blazes appear to be painted over in this area - use caution as trail is very easy to miss.

The faint blazing in this area have been redone and should be better now reports the adopter for this section. I still have not got out to Check out south of Rt.141 but hope to do this within two weeks with some new trail people who are adopting the section north of here. They can be shown the correct way to blaze trail and why lack of blazes at a turn will confuse hikers.
