The profiles were created in Wildflower Production's Topo! package.
This wonderful series of scanned USGS topographic maps is available
through National Geographic. The
Northeastern USA contains over 2400 7.5' maps on 10 CD-ROMs.
Most maps are in shaded relief.
The profiles reflect a mouse line drawn over the route of the
trail, therefore the mileage is not ground-level accurate. They
are included here as a visual indication of elevation change over
the course of each section. It is easy to be misled. For instance,
the profile for section 22 looks relatively flat until you look
at the graph and realize you are climbing 2000' in just over 2 miles.
Mostly, you will see a graphic example of our local terrain, which
is characterized by small mountains with steep sides.
As with all such things there is no substitute for a guidebook,
map, and compass.
