The MM Trail is a long distance
hiking foot path that is maintained by the Berkshire chapter of
the Appalachian Mountain club and other volunteers. It is approximately
117 miles from the Metacomet trail on the Connecticut State line
to Mt. Monadnock in New Hampshire. This site is designed to allow
those who have never experienced the M-M trail to get a taste of
it's beauty, and for newcomers and old hands to offer observations
on it's condition.
The M-M trail was originally
built by the late Prof. Walter M. Banfield in the 1950's, and has
been evolving ever since. It passes through some of the prettiest
landscape in Western Massachusetts, including the Mt. Tom State
Reservation, and Skinner State Park.
A guidebook, now in its ninth
edition, is available from New England Cartographics. The trail
descriptions on this site are excerpted from the guidebook. As such
they are incomplete and should not be used for route finding, but
as synopses for choosing a hike.
Before you use the M-M trail
please check our Trail Guide section for updates on trail conditions,
relocations, and hike suggestions. If you do not own a copy of the
guide you may order one using the link below.
