Although originally imported from England in the mid 19th century, by the end of that century a substantial number of companies in the USA were producing them. The number has been variously estimated to be between 150 and 300 companies.  In addition to finding all the companies we will also be trying to answer questions such as the following.

Why did these companies make reel lawn mowers?
Who made the mowers for the trade?
Why did the mowers end up looking the way that they did?
