(1) Hiram Bingham, missionary
1789-1869, American Congregationalist missionary; b. Bennington, Vt.
In 1819 he founded the first Protestant mission in the Hawaiian Islands.
He adapted the Hawaiian language to writing and translated the Bible
into Hawaiian. His son Hiram Bingham, 1831-1908, b. Honolulu, was
also a missionary. In 1857 he founded a mission in the Gilbert Islands and
later adapted the island language to writing.
(2) Wolcott, Oliver, Jr.
1760-1833, Born in Litchfield, CT, 11 January 1760. Connecticut state
comptroller, 1788-1790; U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, 1795-1800; Governor of
Connecticut, 1817-1827; delegate to Connecticut state constitutional convention,
1818. Accused, by political adversaries in 1800, of setting fire to the State
Department, and resigned from the Cabinet in protest against the investigation.
Died in New York, NY, 1 June 1833. Interment at East Cemetery, Litchfield, CT.

(3) Thomas Nelson Page
1853-1922, Writer, diplomat; born in Hanover County, Va. He studied at
Washington College (Lexington, Va.) (1869-72), and the University of Virginia
(L.L.B. 1873-74). He practiced law in Richmond, Va. (1874-93), and wrote
sentimental southern dialect stories, such as In Ole Virginia; or, Marse Chan
and Other Stories (1887). He also wrote novels, essays, biographies, and
children's books, all set in the South before and after the Civil War. He
served as U.S. ambassador to Italy (1913--19), but spent most of his life in
Virginia.
(4) Sir William George Vernon Harcourt
1827-1904, British statesman, born in York, North Yorkshire, N. England, UK. He
studied at Cambridge, practised as a lawyer from 1854, taught international law
at Cambridge, and entered Parliament in 1868. He was solicitor general (1873-
74), home secretary (1880--5), and Chancellor of the Exchequer (1886, 1892-94).
On Gladstone's retirement in 1893 he became Leader of the House of Commons. He
resigned the Liberal leadership in 1898 but remained a private member of the
Party. He is best remembered for his revision of death duties in 1894.
