NOTES: Horace was still living with his parents as late as January 1870. He
was most likely a member of the Masons and his occupation was that of
carpenter and joiner. According to family tradition, their grandson,
Howard, came to live with them after his mother died and his father
remarried because he did not get along with his new step-mother. He
stayed there until he joined the service. Laure (Drake) Hames was
remembered by her granddaughter, Margaret Hefner (who was three years
old at the time), as a woman who dressed in black, sat in a corner, and
did not speak English. A desk made by Horace for his grandson Howard
is in the possesion of Howard's grandson, John Camp.
