containing approximately three hundred and fifty acres. Upon this tract

Notes: Banns for their marriage were published 16 Mar. 1717 at the
Reformed Dutch Church of Hackensack. The record stated that Joris
was then living in Acquackanonk and Marretie was then living in
in Hackensack. After his marriage Joris removed to Preakness. By
deed (unrecorded) dated 4 Dec. 1723, Rip Van Dam, sen., and Rip Van
Dam, jun., of New York, attorneys of Priscilla and Mercy Benthall,
devisees of Thomas Hart, late of London, deceased, for £270, New
York money, conveyed to George Du Remos amd Cornelius Kip, a tract
of land at Perekenes: "Beginning at the south end of the land of
Mdme. Brackhuls at a beech tree standing near by the run from
thence W. by N. 20 chains to a stake there standing; from then N.
7½ (degrees) E. along the marked trees to a stake there standing,
	     90 chains; W 7½ (degrees) N. along David Daniel's line as the
trees are marked to a white oak tree marked four sided near by the
run 112... degrees south along the run 30 chains; then N.N.E. along
the run 23 (degrees) to the place where it first begun:
containing 600 acres, or there abouts." In truth, the boundaries
embraced much more than 600 acres, owing partly to careless
surveying and partly to the custom of making allowances for waste
land. To settle any question as to the title, on account of the
excessive quantity of land, Lewis Morris Ashfield, eldest son and
heir-in-law of Richard Ashfield, of New York, deceased, by deed
dated 1 May 1754, for £60, released all claim in the premises.
His will, dated 25 Mar. 1733, witnessed by Johannes Doremus, Isaack
Kip, and Cornelius Kip, was proved 20 Oct. 1733 and in it he gave
his eldest son, Cornelis, forty shillings for his birthright; to
his wife, Marritie, all his lands during his widowhood, "provided
that when my eldest son shall come of age of one and twenty years
his equal share or dividend of all my lands shall devolve unto him,
he paying yearly unto his mother, one-fourth part of the wheat,
rye, Indian corn, and buckwheat he yearly raises upon said land and
the share of all the rest of my children shall devolve unto them
	     respectively when they come to the age of one and twenty years";
after-born children to share equally. Executors were his brothers,
Cornelius and Thomas, and his wife's brother John Berdan, jun., and
	     Cernant (Coenrad?) Berdan.

On 6 Dec. 1733 Marritie mar. as her second husband Jacob Tietsoort.
It is said that this second marriage did not turn out happily for
	     her children.

Children: 1. CORNELIS DOREMUS, had no birth or baptismal record and was prob.
		b. in Preakness, Passiac Co., NJ. On 30 Mar. 1741 he mar. SARA
(SAARTJE) REYERSE, who was b. 24 June 1716, a dau. of Frans
Reyersen and Jenneken Dirckesen Dey. She was recorded as having
been b. at Waggereuw with both living at Preakness. He died
about 1803 or 1804 and because his wife was not mentioned in his
will it is presumed that she predeceased him. His will, dated
24 July 1801, witnessed by Margaret Jacobus, Ph. Dey, and John
Dey, and proved 12 Jan. 1804, mentions his son George how
devised his whole estate with he to pay "to the lawful children
of my son Jacob each thirty pounds or seventy-five dollars, and
to my granddaughter Sarah, the wife of Robert Murphy $25, and
to granddaughter Margaret, the wife of Martin Vanderhoof $275."
Executors were nephew George Doremus, "son of my late brother
John Doremus deceased," and son George.

	    2. JOHANNES DOREMUS, was b. 1 Sept. 1720 at Preakness, Passiac Co.,
NJ. On 31 Mar. 1748 at the Reformed Dutch Church at Hackensack
(with banns published there 5 Mar. 1748) he mar. MAREYTJE
LUTKENS, who was b. 25 Feb. 1730/31, a dau. of Hannes Luikese
and Annaetjen Anjevens. He was recorded as living at Sloterdam
and she at Paramus. They joined the Reformed Dutch Church of
Hackensack on confession of faith 15 Feb. 1750. Johannes was
said to have not gotten along with his step-father. After an
incident where his step-father had flogged him, Johannes left
home, went to Hackensack, bought an ax, walked out to a forest,
cut down trees, and built a log hut. In the course of time he
was able to buy a tract of several hundred acres of land at
Red Mills (now Arcola), Bergen Co., NJ, including the site of
the first log cabin. During the Revolutionary War he was siezed
by a party of Tories from New York and carried off to that city,
where he was confined in the Sugar House for six months,
contracting a disease, from the effects of which he died on 22
		July 1784. Mareytje died 20 Dec. 1777.

	    3. JORIS DOREMUS, was bap. 21 Oct. 1722 at the Reformed Dutch
Church at Hackensack. Wit.: Jan Berdan and Eva, his wife. He
mar. MAREGRIETJE TITSOORT, who had no birth or baptismal record
and was prob. b. in 1723. She died 1 Mar. 1767 and was bur. at
		Lower Preakness.

	    4. DAVID DOREMUS, was bap. 19 Dec. 1725 at the Reformed Dutch
Church at Hackensack. Wit.: Albert and Helena Bardan. There is
		no further record of him.

	    5. HENDRICK DOREMUS, was bap. 5 Nov. 1727 (as HINDRIK) at the Reformed
Dutch Church at Hackensack. Wit.: Hendrik Doremis and Marretje
Hesselse, his wife. He mar. AAGJE (EGGE) VAN HOUTEN, who was b.
29 Oct. 1721, a dau. of Helmigh Roelof Van Houten and
Catharina Van Giesen, of Preakness. Hendrick inherited most of
his father's lands at Preakness, and, being a famer, added
thereto by purchase, until he owned more than 300 hundred acres
in all. The fear of losing his extensive possessions induced
him to preserve his allegiance to the king, at a time when the
king could not protect him. The patriots were in control of the
machinery of the courts and governments, and Hendrik fled to
Staten Island, with is family, to escape the wrath of the
Revolutionists. On 11 Nov. 1778, an inquisition was taken
against him in the Bergen Count courts, "for offending against
the form of his allegiance to the State of New jersey;" final
judgement was obtained against him at the March term, 1779, at
Pompton; on 26 Mar. 1779 a writ was issued, ordering the sale of
his lands, and by deed 4 Nov. 1779, Hendricus Kuyper and James
Board, commissioners of forfeited estates, sold to Adolphus
Waldon the real estate of the fugitive Loyalist: adjoining
Roelof Van Houten and Nicolas Kip, bounded east by the road
north by Theunis Hennion, was by the north and south line, and
south by Nicholas Kip, containing 307 acres. His widow, Aagye,
released her dower right in the premises to Waldron, 24 Aug.
		1790.
