NOTES: Charles' birth name was Karel. He, his wife, and his children (Alphons,
Cyrille, Eduardus, Emelie, Ferdinand, Polidor, and Theophile), emigrated
5 May 1887 to the United States. On 4 January 1892, Charles applied for
citizenship in the United States. He signed with his mark. He was
naturalized 19 March 1894. His occupation was that of farmer.
According to his death certificate he took ill on 24 August 1897 and
died two days later at 10:00 (A.M. or P.M not specified) from "cholera
morbus."
According to the 1900 census for Wayne Co., Maria (known as Mary) was
employed as a farmer. At that point in time she could neither write,
read, nor speak English. The same census listed her as having had eight
children with seven surviving. In photographs of her she is missing
part of her lower jaw which supposedly was removed due to the presence
of cancer.
This page would not be possible without the wonderful input from cousins
Allan Hess Perry, Karen C. Fitzmaurice Camp, and Jim Bittel, and I am
indebted to them for their unselfish sharing of information.
