WHAT'S NEWfrom theWHOLESALE KLEZMER BAND?Now in our twenty-sixth year, we are featuring new songs, stories and instrumental tunes by our members at our concerts: Yosl Kurland sings "Moyshe Kapoyer" his song about children's logic and the strange backwards, inside-out, upside-down things that children do. Yosl says it took him twelve years to gather the examples to use in the song. Yosl also teaches the audience to sing "Nisht Eyns," a counting song that he wrote for the children's program at Klez Kamp. The song, whose title in English means "not one" teaches the lesson that as Jews, we are not supposed to assign numbers to people because to do so dehumanizes them. In between singing of this song, Yosl tells the story of accompanying his son's sixth grade class, of which his son was the only Jewish member, to visit the Holocaust Museum during their class trip to Washington DC. On the instrumental side, our clarinetist, David Tasgal leads us in "Reyzele's Hora" which he composed as a love song to his wife. What isn't new is the way we bring joyous and meaningful Jewish music to Jewish and non-Jewish audiences, with subtitles and storytelling so that everyone understands and feels included. |
